Tucked between dramatic cliffs and the deep blue Atlantic, Puerto de Mogán has a reputation that precedes it. Postcard-pretty, peppered with pastel houses, blooming bougainvillea, and gently bobbing boats. Often dubbed “Little Venice,” it’s the kind of place that floods your feed long before you ever set foot on its sun-soaked streets.
But here’s the question no one really answers: is Puerto de Mogán genuinely a must-visit gem, or just a beautifully branded stopover? In this guide, I’ll cut through the picture-perfect façade and give you the honest truth – whether it’s worth your precious holiday time, better as a day trip, or deserving of a longer, lingering stay.
In the post we’ll cover…
- Where to stay in Puerto de Mogan.
- What to expect and a bit of history.
- Things to do in Puerto de Mogan.
- Some travel tips for visiting and staying.

Visiting Puerto de Mogan – But For How Long??
If you’re wondering if Puerto Mogan is worth visiting, the answer is ABSOLUTELY! – It’s one of the most picturesque places in Gran Canaria. So then, probably the more important question is ‘how much time should you spend there?’.
This all depends on what you want from a holiday. It’s not the most ideal location for folk who like to explore, since Puerto Mogan is at the far west end of the motorway that circles Gran Canaria. Expect to add at least another 20 to 30 minutes on to any day-trip you want to take compared to more convenient resorts such as Meloneras or Maspalomas.
That said, if what you’re after is a slow, sun-soaked slice of island life, this is where Mogán really comes into its own. Come late afternoon when the tick-box tourists leave, the energy shifts and the place finally relaxes—fewer cameras, fewer queues and fewer people power-walking to “see it all“. The pace drops, the crowds thin, and you feel lucky that you have it to yourself for a while. It’s a glorious place to stay for a holiday where you can happily lose track of time.

Hotels In Puerto de Mogan – Our Top 3 Choices
We haven’t stayed at any of these ourselves, but we visited them for a reccy after receiving several recommendations. Here are 3 great Puerto Mogan hotels and apartments…
Right on Playa de Mogan, the beach attached to the port town of Puerto de Mogan, this great apartment not only has a large balcony terrace but also ocean views from the bedroom too. We were actually quite surprised at the reasonableness of the rates when we looked because it’s such a good location!
It’s the perfect accommodation in Gran Canaria if you wanted a mix of self-catering and the opportunity to sample some of the local restaurants, because you’re only a few minutes walk to some great establishments, plus the kitchen facilities are spot on. Then there’s the opportunity to eat your meals on the large terrace with those beach views.

V&L BEACHFRONT APARTMENT by VILLA GRAN CANARIA
Again, right on the beach at Playa Mogan but at the end closest to the marina, Villa Gran Canaria is another great option especially if you’re travelling in a larger group as there are 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. This apartment also has a large terrace to enjoy the views from as well. It’s beautifully modern and well kitted out and so spacious inside. THRE RADISSON BLU GRAN CANARIA MOGAN
Some travel-agent friends of ours really love this hotel – it’s their number one selling hotel in Gran Canaria! It’s a five star inclusive at the top of town and requires a fifteen minute walk down-hill to the marina and beach, but to be honest this seems like the perfect antidote to sitting on a sun-lounger all day and eating your body weight in buffet food.
We had a quick nose around the resort and I can see why they love it – it’s stylish, it’s elegant, and it just had a great vibe. A really large hotel that somehow didn’t feel swarmed with people and is so well designed you feel like you’re enveloped by the surrounding mountains. And despite the fact kids are allowed at this 5 star hotel in Puerto Mogan, the place still felt calm and there were plenty of places to chill and hide.

A Bit About Puerto De Mogan, Gran Canaria
Puerto de Mogán is what happens when a fishing village realises how photogenic it is and leans all the way in. But historically it wasn’t trying to be charming – it just sort of ended up that way. For centuries, this was a working port, tied to fishing, small-scale agriculture, and the broader Atlantic rhythms that shaped all of the Canary Islands.
But before that the indigenous ‘Guanche’ people built their homes in caves in this secret ravine of Barranco de Mogan. And, whilst you won’t see the caves from your marina-side lunch, they are a quiet reminder that life here long predated the boutique hotels and sangria happy-hour.
Gran Canaria has always sat in a curious geopolitical limbo: geographically African, politically Spanish, historically ‘Guanche’, plus the birthplace of Latin America would you believe. And, all of these personality traits show up in the town of Puerto de Mogan – although they’re more of a whisper than a shout-out. White washed Andalusian aesthetics, Atlantic seafood traditions, and a botanical crossover with Africa all give Mogan its fingerprint. On top of all of that, the fine sand Saharan winds carry in a bizarre kinda haze that paints the sky pink at dusk and turns everything slightly sepia toned.
It’s a very unique corner of Gran Canaria for sure.

Things To Do In Puerto de Mogan, Gran Canaria
There aren’t a million things to do in Puerto de Mogan, this isn’t a large town full of landmarks, monuments and museums. It’s a cute and colourful harbour town with just a few things worth pointing out and stopping by…
- Mogan Market Day – held every friday, 9am – 2pm, and great for a spot of souvenir shopping if you like pottery, handmade jewellery and leather goods. It’s set back from the town near the municipal park.
- Stroll around the Marina and Little Venice district – this is the spot that gets in all the holiday albums. Bougainvillea on white-washed houses, painted details, and cute little bridges are all waiting for the snapping.
- The Centro Historico is equally as appealing with its pretty alleyways, slow squares and more flowers hanging from balconies and window boxes.

- Explore Cañada de los Gatos Archaeological Site – to the east of Playa de Mogan is the fascinating historical dwelling site of the ancient Canarii Guanche people. Walk around the large settlement of homes, caves, burial tombs, and the particularly sophisticated ‘house of the seven corners’. Closed Mondays, Entrance €4.
- Relax on Playa de Mogan. Sheltered from the elements, this crescent moon bay is a perfectly lovely beach to chill and swim in. Ideal for families as the water is so calm.
- Eat fresh seafood in the marina. Local dishes like grilled sea bass or papas arrugadas are must‑tries. Or if you like a paella, Restaurante Salunna is famous for it.
- Watch the sunset from the Mirador de Puerto de Mogán. Worth staying into the evening for if you’re visiting Mogan for the day – climb the 257 steps for panoramic views of the town and coast.
- Mogan Village is worth a stop too. Either on your way down to Puerto de Mogan, or on the ascent, allow a little time for the old mountain village of Mogan. Check out the cute little church of San Antonio de Padua and also the windmill cafe, Molino Quemado, an iconic restored mill that tells part of Mogans rural history and serves local fresh food.

Travel Tips For Visiting Puerto De Mogan
Whether you’re visiting Puerto de Mogan to stay, or just for a Gran Canaria day trip idea, here are a few travel tips to make the most of your plans…
- If you’re visiting for the day we’d suggest coming mid to late afternoon and hanging around once most of the tourists have left. The town is much more beautiful then when the crowds thin out and you can take advantage of some happy hour cocktails or the catch of the day.
- There is plenty of parking on Explanada del Castillete right at the end of the marina.
- If you’re in Gran Canaria without a car, you can catch the Yellow Ferry from Maspalomas/Playa del Ingles and take the scenic 40 minute ride to Puerto de Mogan.
- Kayak and paddle boards can be hired from the beach and the water is calm enough for beginners.
- Most restaurants close for a siesta between 3 – 5pm.
