Our Top 5 SPA Hotels – Midlands
Our quest for the perfect Midlands SPA break started an ongoing investigation that has continued for years – a trial that we selflessly undergo for the sake of our readers. Alongside personal recommendations, polls, and the occasional detour to a hotel for a quick reccy for a potential future spa break – we think we have come up with the perfect Midlands Spa hotels for a luxury short break.
1. Elan Spa At Mallory Court Country House, Leamington Spa
Royal Leamington Spa has been a popular regal Spa town for centuries, so it should definitely know what it’s doing when it come to thermals and restorative retreats. Mallory Court Country House Hotel and Spa is set in a beautiful country house fit for Shakespeare. And with its 10 acres of elegantly landscaped gardens, expect peace and tranquillity to the max.
Luxurious brands like ESPA and Temple Spa toiletries compliment the opulent hotel feel. And, the 3 AA Rosette restaurant with scenic terraced views just tops off the experience. The hotel is part of the Eden Hotel Collection, so expect luxury throughout.
The SPA includes an indoor Salt Sauna, Steam Room and Hydrotherapy pool, whilst outside there’s a glass-fronted sauna and hot tub. And if you do have the good fortune to pick one of the 10 days that we see sunshine here in the UK, then the sun-lounging patio is just beautiful.
PRO’S
- Absolute luxury throughout.
- As much a dining experience as a spa experience.
- 2 beautiful nearby towns worth exploring – Leamington Spa and Stratford Upon Avon.
CON’S
- Not as many spa facilities as some other spa hotels in the Midlands.

2. Dormy House Hotel & Spa, The Cotswolds
Set in a 17th-century converted farmhouse with views over the Vale of Evesham, you’re in for a rural treat at Dormy House. And, you can even extend your spa experience by booking a hot tub suite for a champagne-filled evening in your own private outdoor jacuzzi under the stars. This was definitely the icing on the cake for us!
Dormy House’s chic spa is influenced by Scandinavian therapeutic practices and the focus is on wellbeing. There are all the usual spa commodities, like the hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room. But, you also have access to an Epsom salt floatation tank, a fire and ice experience in the thermal suite, and the tropical and snow showers.
Back at the hotel the Farncombe family bend over backwards to maximise your enjoyment and are devoted to making your spa break the best. The food is top-notch and finishing off the evening in ‘the shed’ for after-dinner drinks will be a memory you won’t forget, I’m sure.
This is truly a Midlands spa break dedicated to reinvigoration.
PRO’S
- You’d be hard-pushed to find a nicer hotel.
- Your own private hot tub in certain rooms.
- Set on the outskirts of Broadway, possibly England’s prettiest town?
CON’S
- Children are allowed to use the pool between 9.30-10.30am and 3.30-4.30pm.
- Access to the pool area may be limited during peak times, with allocated time-slots (although this didn’t happen when we were there).

3. Ragdale Hall Spa, Leicestershire
Probably the most well-known Midlands spa to most, and possibly the largest, Ragdale Hall is praised for its elegant surroundings. This beautiful Victorian manor house has been pleasing spa guests for over 50 years and definitely knows what it’s doing.
Unlike the previous 2 Midlands spa breaks which lay emphasis on relaxation, Ragdale has more of a vintage upper-class fitness club feel to it – think Jane Fonda and Mr Motivator. In fact, every day there are half a dozen fitness classes on offer to the guests. Plus there are 6 pools, an extensive array of facilities and over 100 therapists on the books. This is not your intimate spa choice.
That said, Ragdale still has a number of USP’s – the most outstanding one to us being the rooftop infinity pool. It’s beautiful at night when the air is cooler but you’re a balmy 35 degrees, and the pool is magically lit with underwater lights. Gazing out across the countryside it was hard to tear yourself away from the underwater jets on your lower back! It was also a struggle to get my husband out of the indoor candle pool too – this really is a spa you could spend all day in.
PRO’S
- If you like a couple of treatments on your spa day the choice is endless.
- The spa is extensive and you could easily spend a whole day enjoying the different areas.
CON’S
- Not as stylish as the other spa’s on our list.
- The food is average.
4. The Elms Hotel & Spa, Worcestershire
Located in the extremely picturesque countryside of Worcestershire, the restored Queen Ann style mansion that is home to The Elms Hotel does a mighty fine job of combining historic charm, botanical glamour and modern luxury. Especially if you’re seeking a touch of opulence during your Midlands spa break!
The compact spa features an indoor swimming pool, thermal suite, sauna, steam room, and an outdoor hydrotherapy pool, plus an ice fountain and sensation shower. But the 2 details that elevated it worthy of a spot on our Midlands spa list are the quality of the therapists and treatments, AND the roof-top terrace.
And, in addition to the gorgeous bedrooms and spa facilities, The Elms has a fantastic restaurant which proudly represents Worcestershire’s culinary heritage and local ingredients. You’re in for a treat at this Midlands spa hotel as it’s an ideal destination for those seeking an indulgent getaway.
PRO’S
- A high-quality modern spa, with excellent therapists, in a stunning setting.
- Incredibly beautiful decor in the hotel.
- Top notch food in the hotel restaurant.
CON’S
- Whilst it has everything you would require, the spa is a little on the small side.

5. Rushton Hall, Kettering
Our final Midlands spa break entry goes to the beautiful Grade I stately hall hotel, Rushton Hall, in the heart of the English countryside. This 16th century mansion really does transport you back in time! 25 acres of landscaped gardens and serene lakes are the perfect backdrop for a relaxing weekend escape.
Rushton Hall has been awarded 4 red stars and 3 rosettes, so you really can be confident of a quality experience. Plus, your evening meal in the oak panelled historical dining room will have you wishing you’d packed your starched petticoats and arrived by horse!
The Stableyard Spa is a quaint little courtyard get-up with plenty of original features and lots of high quality details. And, whilst many would describe Rushton Hall as a ‘beautiful hotel with a nice pool area’, rather than a spa hotel, this is still a very good value option for a spa break destination.
PRO’S
- The 3 hour, 7 course tasting menu in the Tresham Restaurant by top chef Martin Allen
- Laid-back spa access – no booking required.
- A dedicated couples treatment room AND specialised pregnancy treatments.
CON’S
- Not an extensive spa but beautifully done despite its limited capacity.
- Both hotel guests and day visitors have access to the spa so it can get busy, especially on weekends.
